Money may seem straightforward, but every monetary system is built on choices that influence both your daily life and society as a whole. Do you spend your money today, or would you rather save it for tomorrow? And will buying your own home still be possible in the future? In this programme, you will explore what money is and investigate which form of money best matches your own preferences. What kind of money will we use in the future, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), stablecoins, or Bitcoin? Or might we return to more traditional forms of money such as gold and silver?

What will you do?

Using the fundamental characteristics of money, you will examine existing forms of money and select a good or asset that you believe could function as money. Which form of money is the best, for society, and for you personally? You will also investigate how our current monetary system influences your own time preference. Are you someone who saves regularly, or do you tend to spend your money as soon as you receive it? You will explore whether this is purely a personal trait or partly a consequence of the monetary system we use as a society. Finally, you will gain practical experience with Bitcoin and learn how to use it safely and responsibly.

What will you learn?

You will learn to evaluate monetary systems critically and assess different forms of money using objective criteria. You will develop your own well-reasoned perspective on the future of money and gain a better understanding of your personal time preference. In addition, you will learn more about the technology behind Bitcoin and how to use it securely and responsibly.

2.3 Perspective-taking skills
The student identifies differences between viewpoints and is open to insights from another perspective.

Learning outcome: In the future, you will be confronted with one or more monetary systems that will replace the euro. Based on objective criteria, you will be able to assess the value of these monetary systems and determine your own preference. You will undoubtedly find yourself in discussion with people who, based on the same objective criteria, nevertheless arrive at a different preference than you.

5.2 Creativity
The student outlines and develops original and innovative ideas and solutions for challenges and problems, even when this is unconventional.

Learning outcome: Which currency will we use in the future? CBDC, stablecoin or Bitcoin? Each option has its pros and cons. Or perhaps we will return to the old, trusted currency of the past: gold and silver? Choose or devise for yourself which currency YOU want to use for your specific situation or community!
