Storytelling can take many forms, including at a games table. In this package, you'll use board games to create a world together, make choices and take on challenges. You'll discover, in a creative and accessible way, how you collaborate, think and use your imagination. No experience is required, just a willingness to join in and share ideas.

What will you do?

You'll take part in board games in which you build a world together with other students and develop characters and storylines. During guided sessions, you'll take on challenges, make choices and experience how these influence the course of the story. You'll come up with creative solutions to open-ended situations and work together with others on a shared story. In a relaxed and imaginative environment, you'll actively work on communication and collaboration.

What will you learn?

You'll develop skills in creative thinking and problem-solving by working with open-ended and complex situations. You'll learn how actions and choices have consequences and how to analyse these. You'll also strengthen your communication skills and collaboration, and discover how people give meaning to complex systems and decisions. By the end of the package, you'll not only have created a story, but also gained insight into how to arrive at solutions together.

Structure of the activity "Storytelling through Tabletop Gaming"

Katie Hardwick

Creativity & innovation
Creativity & innovation

2.2 Complexity awareness and meaning-making
The student identifies connections and patterns in a problem or situation, explains these in a clear way, and works effectively with complex or systematic conditions or relationships.

5.2 Creativity
The student outlines and develops original and innovative ideas and solutions for challenges and problems, even when unconventional.

The learning outcomes of this activity focus on developing students' ability to work with complexity and to think creatively in collaborative settings. By participating in a shared tabletop role-playing campaign, students learn to recognise and analyse patterns, relationships, and consequences within complex situations, and to explain these in a clear and meaningful way. They develop creativity by generating original ideas, characters, and solutions to open-ended challenges, often in response to uncertainty or limited information. Through collaboration with peers from different study programmes, students strengthen their communication and interpersonal skills, learn to consider multiple perspectives, and reflect on how collective decisions shape outcomes. Together, these outcomes support students' capacity to forge meaning in complex systems and to apply creative thinking in unfamiliar contexts.
